Happy 1 Year to the Flagstaff EcoRanch

It seems like yesterday I was getting home from South America ready to hit the ground running.  Since then, it has been a whirlwind of meetings, part-time jobs, fundraisers, project development, presentations, community outreach, volunteers, material scavenging, and learning.  Looking back at the progress of the EcoRanch in one year has been mind blowing to think about and where we are today would never have been possible without the support of our community, family, friends, and volunteers.  Thank YOU so much for believing in us, referring us, helping us out financially or getting your hands dirty, and giving us the chance to educate and communicate our goals and beliefs.

Below are some achievements from our first year.

Arboretum Plant Sale

Sasha, Travis, and I spent the day chatting with visitors to the Arboretum’s Plant Sale Fundraiser.  We got to listen to an orchestra and polka music while telling people about the EcoRanch, eating pizza, and enjoying great views of the San Francisco Peaks!

Donations to Flagstaff Family Food Center

Today we had the pleasure of Professor Peggy Pollack and her summer Sustainable Botany Class at NAU return to the EcoRanch.  Our raised beds are doing considerably well, better than we expected.  Looking back at when we first planted, it was all such a blur.  We were in a rush trying to build the raised beds fast enough and getting plants from seed, our starts, and the CSA starts program into those beds so we didn’t lose anymore of our already short growing season, that we overlooked some things.  Some pretty important things like, how do we care for them once they start growing and how should we be harvesting them.

Many of the plants were flowering and becoming overgrown, so our solution was to have the students research, then teach the EcoRanch and each other about the plants on site.  Peggy assigned her students to research one or two plants we are growing.  After taking a tour of the EcoRanch, the students spent a few minutes searching for their plants.  Oh yeah, we overlooked any kind of labeling too but most of the students were able to successfully ID their assigned plants.  Next, we walked around the property and each student gave a presentation and explained how to grow and care for that particular plant and if the EcoRanch needed to make any corrections.  The amount of information the students had was overwhelming and we learned a lot.

Following the student presentations, we harvested from the beds.  All the produce we harvested was promptly delivered to the Flagstaff Family Food Center on N. 2nd Street in Flagstaff.  In total we harvested 27.5 lbs of produce.  Here is the list of what we delivered and the market cost.

  • Onions – 3.5 lbs @ $1.99 = $6.97
  • Radishes – 1 lb @ $2.49 = $2.49
  • Basil – 0.25 lbs @ $4.39/oz = 17.56
  • Mustard Greens – 8.25 lbs @ $2.99 = $24.67
  • Kale (Red Russian/Lacinato) – 5 lbs @ $1.99 = $9.95
  • Lettuce – 2.5 lbs @ $1.99 = $4.98
  • Chard – 2.5 lbs @ $2.99 = $7.48
  • Bok Choy – 4.25 lbs @ 1.99 = $8.46
  • Spinach – 0.25 lbs @ $2.79 = $0.70
  • Total – 27.5 lbs = $83.26

Thanks a lot to the NAU Sustainable Botany Class for helping us get fresh, local produce to people in Flagstaff who really need it.  You can volunteer at the Flagstaff Family Food Center.

New Updates

This week we have June water data and photos for you.  We sent out all the Kickstarter incentives, so if you do not receive yours, please email us asap.

We had two great photographers, Chris and Trish, stay with us in the bed and breakfast and we swapped a couple of free nights for a photo shoot of the ranch.  Check out the Flickr account to the right for all the photos and then check out their websites!  Very extraordinary photographers.

Since our last freeze (crazy mid June freezes) many of the plants are recovering quite well and some of the squash is even shooting out new buds.  We’ll see if they have time to recover before it gets really cold again.  Since then we have put up 3 new hoop houses which helped the other day deflect the hail that accompanied our monsoons (YAY they are here!!!!!) and we will be adding 4 more in the next couple of weeks.

The greens are thriving and it has been nice to run down to the garden to make fresh, crisp, healthy salads with dinner.  We are also diligently working away to become GHP/GAP certified so we can sell wholesale…that is if everything continues with the success we have been having recently.

A delayed update

Howdy everyone.  Hope summer is treating you and your gardens well.  It’s been a while since we updated you on our progress…mostly because we have been making so much progress outside.

Over the past few weeks our WWOOFers; Lindsay (Phoenix), Travis (California), Mary (All over) and Sasha (Moscow) have been extremely helpful keeping plants growing, the soil wet, and projects moving forward.  Cedar (an intern from NAU) has been advancing with the grey water system from the washing machine.  This project will help return 36 gallons of water per large load into the soil to irrigate the upper field.  The berms that were installed this year will help filter the water and allow it infiltrate deeper into the ground.  Alicia and Sam (interns at NAU) are collaborating on root cellar designs and different options for the EcoRanch.  We hope to have this project done by the end of July so we can store onions, carrots, potatoes, and radishes this winter….that is if we don’t eat them all by then.

We had our first sprinkle yesterday and I could hear it pouring into our rain barrel…WOO HOO…the monsoons are hopefully around the corner!  WATER!

On Wednesday, Upward Bound students visited and spent the day working on projects around the house.  The groups raked leaves, helped install grey water pipes, weeded, took soil and water tests, calculated the amount of lumber we could get from 21 trees, planted squash and beans around the corn, planted marigolds for pest reduction, bake bread, and helped prepare the outdoor shower area.  After a break for lunch, students spent an hour reading on the porch and then we revisited each group’s project.  Students described their project to the class and explained how it pertained to sustainable living or agriculture.  It was great to see them making connections between work and sustainability and to realize how important healthy food, soil, water, and resources are to keeping a healthy self.

Lastly, the Kickstarter incentives are almost ready to be sent.  The chickens are named, signs have been hung, and the magnets and t-shirts are here.  We just need to finish processing some photos and get addresses from everyone (if you haven’t sent us you email as a donor, please do so, we want to send out your goodies).   Once all the incentives are ready to be sent, we will post photos on the website so please keep checking in.

Come on out and visit if you get a chance.
